Drunk Rock review on HUSSIESKUNK
The Bloody Irish Boys
Drunk Rock (released 2005)
Sick Sad Records
Just because they offer the same genre of sound as Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, The Bloody Irish Boys don't necessarily deserve the same praise... In fact, they deserve more! The Bloody Irish Boys debut release showcases the bands ability to create great Irish folk meets punk music, that is more in the traditional vein of The Tossers. And to be blatantly honest, I find that the Tossers and The Bloody Irish Boys, stick to the traditional sound a helluva lot more than their more popular contemporaries. TBIB play with heart, as one would expect from this now popular genre, but what's more they play their tunes with their own flair that helps separate them from the pack of bands that seem to rule the sound. However, throughout "Drunk Rock" many of the same themes apply to TBIB and to DKM, such as beer, lots of beer, and their salute to the homeland through traditional Irish tunes. For instance, TBIB's version of "Tim Finnegan's Wake" is like nothing I have ever heard before, while it is uptempoed like so many other versions, TBIB really turn it into something interesting with fluctuating vocals, a bit of old school hardcore, courtesy of the Misfits, and traditional instrumentation keeping pace with the vocal variations. Beyond this great traditional, TBIB shine with "Enniscorthy In A Bottle", "Just For A Night" and the popular "Full Moon", a whoopass dedication to remembering the good ole days of drinking with your old man. While the band gives thanks to DKM and FM, and trust me I am a fan of both bands, I still think TBIB offer something more that they haven't done in sometime. Lancaster, Ohio's TBIB are something to behold and I suggest any fan of traditional Irish rock, or better yet fans of drinking, should give them a try...disappointed you will not be. -MG,
